4 crore electricity bill. 15 lakhs saved. One change.

4 crore electricity bill. 15 lakhs saved. One change.

This is not a hypothetical. This is the math for a real company in a kVH billing state in India โ€” improving power factor from 0.96 to 0.99.

The payback period for that change? As short as six months. In some cases, one and a half years at most.

And yet, the most common thing I see when procurement teams evaluate power quality equipment is this: they benchmark on price. They see that two products both have a spec sheet, both have a certain rating, and they conclude they are equal. As I often say โ€” they see that both cars have a steering wheel, so they assume it’s the same car. They don’t see the Benz and Maruti difference until it breaks.

What actually happens when you go for the cheaper option? You reinvest the same amount in two to three years when the single-board unit fails and the entire board has to be replaced. You may not even recoup the original cost.

Here is what every procurement head should be asking before issuing an RFQ for an AHF or SVG:

๐Ÿ”น Can this product operate reliably at the ambient temperature of our facility?
๐Ÿ”น If it goes down, what is the replacement cost and turnaround time?
๐Ÿ”น Is the architecture modular, so a failure doesn’t take the entire system offline?
๐Ÿ”น What is the lifecycle cost โ€” not just the procurement cost?
๐Ÿ”น How do I verify that this solution is actually working after installation?

That last question is the one almost nobody asks. Harmonics is genuinely difficult to track. Most facilities that have installed an active harmonic filter don’t actually know if it is working. That is a serious problem when the entire justification for the investment is harmonic reduction.

16 states in India now practice kVA billing. More are moving in that direction. The financial case for fixing power quality has never been clearer.

The engineering team in your facility already knows this. The gap is getting procurement to see it the same way.

Lifecycle cost over procurement cost. Every single time.
