Harmonics is the one power quality problem most facilities don’t know they have — until something breaks.
Cable overheating. Electronic card failures. Light flickering. Busbar heating. Transformer hissing.
These don’t show up as a line item on your electricity bill. They show up as unplanned downtime, replacement costs, and shortened equipment life. And by the time you notice, the damage has been building for months.
Here’s the challenge — unlike power factor, which you can read off your energy meter, harmonics cannot be easily identified. You need a proper power quality study and 24/7 monitoring to know what’s really happening inside your network.
And this problem is only growing.
Every VFD on your shop floor, every inverter-driven AC, every BLDC fan, every solar installation, every EV charger — they all generate harmonics. The nonlinear load on India’s grid has never been higher. Most industries today are running at 20–25% THD. Some are at 30%. IEEE 519 says it should be below 8% at 80% loading.
That’s not a small gap. That’s a crisis hiding in plain sight.
